Derby is a classified historic riverside town north-east of Launceston. Once a booming mining settlement, Derby still holds onto its historic roots but is now known globally as a world-class mountain biking destination. It features 125km of singletrack trails twisting through beautiful forests and mountains, all extending from within the town centre. It has massive rock features, fauna that looks straight out of the Jurassic period, and some of the most magical dirt on earth. Derby has trails to suit riders from seasoned pros to families and beginners — and even a few one-of-a-kind oddities like the Derby Tunnel to explore by bike or on foot. The town has been reborn around this MTB mecca with cafes, restaurants, pubs, bike shops, a gin distillery, shuttle companies, a world class floating sauna and more. If you’re looking to connect to its history, the Derby Schoolhouse Museum is still open. Here you can discover for yourself that Blue Lake really is blue; take a long walk, go fishing or paddle a canoe on the Briseis Water Hole, explore the many walking trails, go panning for gemstones nearby in the Weld River or take a step back in time at the Mt Paris Dam. Ample accommodation is available through Derby’s own booking platform ridebluederby.com.au and two generously sized campsites. Derby is a 1 hr 20 min drive from Launceston or a 1 hr drive from St Helens and a must see when in the North of Tasmania.
