About Us

Akuna Dragon Boat Club -  A club that caters for the community,  with the aim to open up the sport of dragon boating to people from all walks of life and abilities. Fun fitness and friendship for the whole family. Our members enjoy coffee mornings, social events and volunteering  at fundraising events.

The name Akuna is an Australian Aboriginal word meaning " flowing water"  and "moving forward". Our emblem, the Leafy Sea Dragon was designed by Indigenous artist Christine Slabb. Our logo and colours together were created by our founders in 2009.

We enjoy participating at local regattas, festivals, Qld state titles year after year and have participated at the National titles.  Akuna is proud to have had 3 Junior paddlers in the Auroras representing in Hungary,2013 and currently has a  Head Coach who participated in the World Championships in China, 2017.

Akuna can be seen training on the picturesque Currumbin Creek 3 times a week.  We meet by the boat ramp at the back of the PBC Sports Club, ready to be on the water  7.30am on Saturdays and 5:45pm Mondays & Wednesdays.

If you are interested in having a go we always carry spare paddles and will gladly welcome you - experienced or not, Akuna welcomes everyone, all cultures, fitness levels, age groups and we have a strong family atmosphere.
