buttonHighgate is one of Perth’s smallest suburbs, punching well above its weight as a foodie and cultural hotspot. Follow your nose along Beaufort Street to this eclectic hub of the coolest coffee stops, small bars, bakeries, flavours from all corners of the globe, boutiques, quirky street art and some of the funkiest community events hosted in its charming European-style piazza. Take Beaufort Street north-east from the centre of Perth, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Highgate within just a few minutes. It’s an easy five to ten-minute drive, a six-minute ride on the bus, or a 20-minute walk. Grab your drinks and bites and head for the shady lawns and art-filled oasis of May Street Piazza for a picnic lunch with the locals. On weekends you might even catch some free live music in the piazza, particularly in the month of November when the Beaufort Street Festival fills the air with the amazing sounds and aromas of local artists and artisans. Photographers, art deco fans and history buffs in search of the curious and bizarre are also drawn to Highgate’s towering landmark - the Lincoln Street Vent. Originally a sewage vent, then a radio antenna protecting Australia against Japanese air raids during World War II, it’s now listed with the National Trust of Australia and the State Register of Heritage Places. In the warmer months, Highgate even has its own outdoor cinema screening contemporary favourites, cult classics and premieres in a cosy, tropical amphitheatre.
