Balranald Council has an approximate area of 22,000 km².
It is surrounded by the suburbs of Goodnight, Happy Valley, Kenley, Liparoo, Narrung, Robinvale and Wemen.

It is surrounded by the councils of Carrathool, Central Darling, Hay, Mildura Rural City, Murray River, Swan Hill Rural City and Wentworth.
It is within the state electorate of Murray.
It is within the federal electorate of Farrer.
